Thursday's Child plot

England, early 20th century. Little Margreth leads a contemplative life and spends a carefree childhood. You wouldn't give her that she's an orphaned girl who was found on the steps of the church by a priest on a Thursday. She lives with two beautiful older ladies who take care of her. But suddenly everything changes: the state no longer wants to pay the annual orphanage of 52 pounds for her upbringing and both women can no longer care for her due to poverty, poor health and the onset of dementia. No more money for Margreth means for the young girl that she has to move to an orphanage about 100 miles away. Once there, the trouble begins, for the lively Margaret cannot get used to the matron's rude manners. But she finds new friends in Lavinia and her brothers. When the young girl can no longer tolerate the situation, she decides to escape in search of her real parents.
