The World and His Wife plot

The elderly Spanish nobleman Don Julian is happily married to Teodora, a beautiful young girl, when his protégé, the young poet Ernesto, comes to live with them. Although Teodora harbors only maternal feelings for Ernesto, venomous gossip spreads false rumors of a love affair between the two. Don Alvarez, the most bitter gossip of them all, eventually provokes Ernesto's wrath, and a duel is arranged.
