The Water Is Wide plot

Pat Conroy (Hephner) is an ambitious, slightly rebellious and idealistic young teacher. His first assignment is at a school on the remote island of Yamacrew Island, off the coast of South Carolina. The island is poor and the people have little contact with the mainland. Fishing is the main source of income. The students are virtually illiterate and have no idea about the outside world. Pat Conroy develops some inventive methods to teach the students something useful.
