Reviews & comments

With The Night Manager, director Susanne Bier proved that she could handle the format of a miniseries well, so expectations for this murder mystery starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant were high. And then the result is a bit disappointing. The plot, while quite exciting, is sporadically on the improbable side and the characters do not always know how to captivate. It doesn't help that Hugh Grant is a bit miscast and that Nicole Kidman needs her own lighting to get her porcelain skin as pale as possible. Any emotion can no longer be read from her completely straightened face. Fortunately, we still have the always reliable Donald Sutherland in an important supporting role. All this works towards a rather thick and forced climax. Nice, all in all, but writer David E. Kelley has done much more comparable work with Big Little Lies, for example.

Good mini-series about a successful therapist with a husband and a son whose life is turned upside down. The characters are sometimes a bit too showy plot-driven and the story is unnecessarily stretched here and there. However, this does not alter the fact that it is easy to look away, and of course you still want to know how it ends. It all looks good with a nice setting and a good cast.

After the first two episodes I thought I might be working on a top series, but unfortunately those expectations were not fulfilled.
Too many clichés, too many quirks in plot and characters. Even the court scenes were on the bland side, Jonathan's lawyer caricatured to ludicrous, not to mention the final scene with even Grandpa chasing in the helicopter. .
Let's certainly not tear it down completely. Actually, the series just flows down to an average level. Susanne Bier knows how to make a film for the general public with all kinds of emotions, tension and an exciting ending.
And the actors? Nicole Kidman does her part effortlessly, in my opinion. I still see Hugh Grant as the charmer so this role came across as surprising but in the end he did it as unpredictable, unbalanced psychopath
