The Trojan Horse plot

Journalist Helen Madigan investigates the murder of a computer specialist who has written a computer program that can manipulate elections. Soon she too is being chased by killers, who seem to be working for an alliance of secret services. Strangely enough, the computer program turns out to contain the name of Tom McLaughlin, who was the last Prime Minister of Canada before the country merged into the United States. The president of the United States plans to invade Saudi Arabia for the oil, and McLaughlin, a peace advocate, is running for the US presidency. Fearing that the CIA may be trying to manipulate the upcoming election, Helen decides to seek out McLaughlin and warn him. But she soon realizes that it is not the American government, but he, who is behind the computer program. And that he plans to take over the White House with the help of some European secret services.
