Somewhere in the Russian countryside, in a country house, actress Irina Arkadina (Simone Signoret) has arrived with her friend, the writer, Trigorin (James Mason) and her son Konstantin Treplev to visit her brother Sorin. Konstantin is enamored with the landlord's daughter, Nina (Vanessa Redgrave), who finds herself attracted to Trigorin again.
