Not much of a fan of Mrs. Potter's work. Although I found her best-received film, Orlando, unbearable, this rather melancholy new one wasn't too bad. The Roads Not Taken is a wandering film about a wandering man, a thankless role that is well played by the again very painful-looking Bardem. For the rest, the focus is mainly on the suggestion and appeal to one's own empathy that Potter demands from the viewer in every film, and in 2020, when we demand speed and bite-sized chunks, that will certainly not be to everyone's taste. Given the extremely short playing time, I suspect that the makers themselves are not satisfied with the end result, with an unsatisfactory ending that can be explained in several ways. Artistically speaking, quite a reasonable film. Also because I wanted to feel an affinity with the central theme about a melancholic elderly person who desperately thinks back on his questionable life choices, I thought it was doable this time, but this is actually too lazy-looking a picture that will certainly not be praised by the great mass.

Leo [Javier Bardem] is, for unexplained reasons, in such a state of confusion that his thoughts often wander back to earlier times and can hardly express himself. His daughter Molly [Elle Fanning] tries to help him as best she can, but caring for her father stands in the way of a golden professional opportunity. Salma Hayek plays Leo's ex-girlfriend in this well-directed and solidly acted psychological drama that is rather muddled and goes too emphatically for cheap sentiment towards the end.
