A young man has great success in boxing and becomes a real champion in that sport. He gets the name 'Patent Leather Kid' because of his hair that makes him look a bit like Rudolph Valentino. He is an arrogant fighter who combs his hair between rounds in the ring while the opponent gasps and recovers from the fight. He meets Curley, a dancer, and they fall in love. The boxer struggles to balance his sport with the budding romance. Both things are further jeopardized when the United States faces World War I.
