"There's a time in a young girl's life when nothing's right...but everything's possible."

August 1944. Introverted and depressed 12-year-old Frankie Addams (Anna Paquin) lives in a small Georgia town and feels disconnected from the world in which she lives. Her mother died during her birth and her father is very distant. She dreams of going on a trip with her brother and his girlfriend, who are getting married soon. She spends this hot summer with African-American housekeeper Berenice Sadie Brown (Alfre Woodard) and her 6-year-old nephew John Henry (Corey Dunn).
