It is 1929. The otherworldly chess grandmaster Alexander Luzhin wants to play the game of his life in Italy. Then he unexpectedly meets the beautiful young Natalia. She is destined to marry within her very strict aristocratic milieu, but she falls for the shy, somewhat unworldly Alexander when he awkwardly proposes to her without knowing her. They get into a stormy relationship that everyone is against, while Alexander seems to come from his own strange world.
