The Lady of Red Butte plot

Faro Fan runs her gambling den in Red Butte so exemplarily that she has a positive influence on the town. She devotes considerable time to a group of orphans she has taken under her wing. When the preacher Webster arrives in town, he curses the gambling den. Shortly thereafter, Red Butte is struck by a plague. Smith prays for a fire to purify the town. When the fire burns down his own church and spares Faro's gambling den, he is frantic with rage. The preacher attacks Faro, and she hits him on the head, bringing him back to his senses.
