Americans are on a spaghetti rampage and it depends on the amount of Italo-trash you can tolerate whether you consider that a good or bad thing.

Personally, I'm a fan of Euro-trash, and the fact that United Artists is doing its best to connect with the better pulp is a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

Admittedly, the romance between Reed and Bergen may be a bit hard to believe, but the brilliant plot – scum hunted by Hackman and his associates who possess long-range rifles and can fire at their prey from a relatively comfortable vantage point – is a great starting point.

Beautifully filmed too (although in the scene on the open train carriage a blue screen is clearly visible).

Western with a very simple plot.

Not very concerned with character development. It even comes across as a bit ludicrous in the first half, but makes up for it in the second half with the action scenes and the not insignificant cinematic quality.

Oliver Reed is the least convincing, Gene Hackman has no trouble in his role and Candice Bergen fits best as a "piece" without much moral value.

What a horrible movie.

As a reflection on society—past and present—where anyone in a position of power can seemingly indulge in the most obscene hobbies without consequence. Like Hackman's character, who has his wife kidnapped to give him an excuse to organize a hunting party. Not that he's exactly a loving husband, let that be clear—he prefers his bedmates bleeding, crying, and with fresh burns. He's in it for power, nothing else. The power over love and pleasure, the power over life and death. Like a bullfighter in the arena, he decides who lives and who dies. With impunity, because judgment belongs only to God, and that is he.

Any parallel with today's society is, of course, entirely coincidental, because how could anyone in 1971 have foreseen how shamelessly world leaders are now overindulging without any apparent consequences? That's precisely why it's perhaps a relevant film, even if it's still incredibly unpleasant.

Let me just say that it takes an actor of Hackman's caliber to play that role in such a repulsive way.
