The House on 56th Street plot
During World War I, the entertainer Peggy Martin, London Fiske's mistress, marries her lover, the handsome Monte Van Tyle. She moves into a house on 56th Street and has a baby. Monte is called up by the army and is killed during a military action. Peggy is visited by Fiske again. He wants her back and threatens suicide. Peggy doesn't return Fiske's advances and then the gun he's carrying goes off by mistake and he dies. Peggy is convicted and jailed for murder. Daughter Eleanor Van Tyle is told her mother Peggy is dead. Twenty years later, Peggy is released and meets the gambler Bill Blaine. The house on 56th Street is now a gambling palace, owned by the politician Bonelli. Bill and Peggy get a job there.
