The Heart of Rachael plot
Rachael marries Clarence Breckenridge, whose daughter, Billy, is only a few years younger than her. Clarence, an alcoholic, is devoted to Billy, but because both father and daughter are indifferent to Rachael, she eventually divorces Clarence and marries her old friend, Dr. Warren Gregory. Shortly afterward, Rachael discovers to her dismay that Warren is no longer the loving man she had come to know, but a social climber, just like her first husband.
