The Girl Who Couldn't Quite plot

Teenage Ruth has never been able to smile since she was a young girl. Pamela, her mother, notices one morning that she laughs and learns from the girl that she heard a man singing outside the house, something that amused her. Pamela decides to invite the man if it could help Ruth, but he turns out to be a bum named Tim. Despite this, he is invited to stay and quickly befriends Ruth whose personality begins to improve. The bum also teaches her what charity is. Tim eventually convinces Ruth to talk about her childhood, remembering the traumatic experiences she endured with her nurse, resulting in her inability to smile. Unfortunately, something unexpected happens...
