The Girl plot
In the mid-1800s, Hannah Boyle is left with Matthew Thornton's family in Yorkshire. On her deathbed, Hannah's mother said that Matthew was her father. Hannah is sickened by the ill-treatment she receives from the bitter and vengeful Anne, Thornton's wife. After all, for her, Hannah is living proof of her husband's infidelity. Hannah is married off to the village butcher, who unfortunately doesn't treat her much better. But through her patience, intelligence and strength, she eventually wins her freedom and the love of the man she loves.
