The Gay Defender plot
"A tale of New Spain, of cracking whips, of swishing crinoline, or bold Americanos, and dashing Dons."
Joaquin Murrieta is the son of Ferdinand Murrieta, a Spanish land baron in California. Joaquin falls in love with Ruth Ainsworth, the daughter of United States Commissioner Ainsworth. Bart Hamby is captured by Chombo, the loyal servant of the Joaquin, for stealing gold from the Murrietas. The carefree Joaquin, however, releases him. Jake Hamby, Bart Hamby's criminal brother, decides to challenge Joaquin to a duel in order to steal the gold, but there is no winner from this duel. Jake then tries to persuade Commissioner Ainsworth to help him illegally take possession of land where gold can be found, but he refuses and Jake shoots him dead with Joaquin's pistol.
