The Defection of Simas Kudirka plot

Simas Kudirka (Alan Arkin) mans the radio of a Russian ship. When his ship arrives at Martha's Vineyard, he decides to jump on the deck of the US Coast Guard ship, the USS Vigilant, led by Commander Edward Devon (Richard Jordan). He says he wants to defect, but by law the Americans can't grant him asylum. The crew has no choice but to watch Russian officers capture Kudirka.
