"SUSPICION CAN MAKE OR UNMAKE A MAN-SUSPICION CAN TAKE HIS LIFE"
When the Great War begins, English sportsman Cyril Hammersley is considered a slacker because he refuses to join the army for pacifist reasons. His American fiancée, Doris Mathers, knows he is no coward, but she questions his patriotism when Sir John Rizzio hints that Hammersly may be a German spy. During a dinner, Doris sees Captain Walter Byfield of the British War Office passing a package to Hammersly. After Doris learns that Byfield has been shot for espionage, Hammersly confesses that he is an agent of the British Secret Service and gives Doris the package to hide it.
