Rose of the Golden West plot
It's 1846. California patriots join forces to thwart a suspected plan by dictator Vallero to sell their land to Russia. The attractive young Juan has been chosen to dismantle the plot. As a result, Juan cannot run off with Ela, who is being trained as a nun in the monastery. General Vallero, who is actually Ela's real father, visits Ela at the convent and tells her that he is a friend of her late father and then takes her to Monterey. Along the way, Juan manages to stop General Vallero's fleeing troops and wins his sympathy. However, both men know nothing of each other's true intentions.
