In the 1830s, Tom Rumsford returns to Magnolia Landing, his parents' Mississippi estate. Having been raised in the North by a Quaker family, Tom hates all violence and accordingly refuses a duel. Since this is the only way in the South to settle a dispute between lords, Tom's father General Jeff Rumford is so enraged by his attitude that Tom has no choice but to leave Magnolia Landing.
