Candido Costa's wife is dying, but a doctor will only operate if he is paid immediately. Candido has to ask for money from strangers. But help comes too late and Candido's wife dies. The person from whom he borrowed the money turns out to be one of the worst slave traders, exploiting and mistreating poor peasants.
