Rams plot

"Where there's a wool, there's a way"

Colin and Les are sheep herders and estranged brothers. Their characters sometimes clash, not least because Colin is introverted and eager to learn while Les is hot-headed and rude. After a quiet period of 40 years, the brothers reunite to save their flock. After all, the government wants to have the sheep slaughtered after a ram is found that carries a rare disease.

A decent remake, but it can't match the original. This one is a bit lighter; Hrútar is a bit rawer and, as far as I'm concerned, has a bit more character because of it. The cast doesn't do a bad job, but I do miss a bit of the toughness of the two brothers that the original has.

I prefer Hrútar over this film, but this one is also quite watchable.

A nice film about two brothers who breed sheep and haven't spoken to each other in years. The society in which the film is set is well portrayed. The tone is somewhat uneven, especially regarding the outbreak of the disease. There are certainly a number of good scenes, but the film also drags on a bit too long.

The Australian remake of the Icelandic original, and in the process, the sharper edges have disappeared and the story has been somewhat tamed. On the other hand, the actors have much more to do, and that actually works a bit better. It is nice, though, that Michael Caton bears some resemblance to Theodór Júlíusson, and Sam Neill is wearing the same sweater in the opening – you almost wonder if that thing has actually been washed.

Which is better, the raw original or the crowd-pleasing remake? You tell me; to me, they are both okay, but not really more than that. I thought I was watching this to mark the passing of Sam Neill, but I really need to find a better film for that.
