A Sicilian fishing village in the 1960s. Lucia is eleven years old when her parents decide to exchange their poor existence for a search for work and happiness in France. The girl herself is not part of the plan. She comes to live with her grandmother, the stern and apparently emotionless Maria. Lucia is haunted by nostalgia for her parents.
