Persona Non Grata plot
Wiktor recently lost his wife Helena. Wiktor's old friend Oleg, a Russian diplomat stationed in Poland 20 years ago, appears at her funeral. This gives Wiktor the opportunity to stir up old wounds. He wants to know whether Oleg and Helena were in a relationship at the time and whether Oleg was an infiltrator in the anti-communist movement. He gets no answer until they meet again in Montevideo, Uruguay, where Wiktor is the Polish ambassador. Wiktor also gets involved in problems with the new young consul Waldemar and his bride and his own alcohol abuse.
