Pavilion of Women plot

On her fortieth birthday, Madame Wu decides she no longer wants to share the bed with her husband. She arranges a concubine for him. The family is shocked. Madame Wu is happy with her newfound freedom. She still takes care of the household for the whole family, but also spends time reading books that she was never allowed to read before. She also decides to master the English language and is taught this by the American priest Andre, who falls in love with her.
