Plans to build an oil pipeline that will create at least 10,000 jobs are thwarted by residents of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. The construction not only violates a treaty, but also threatens to spoil the local drinking water. An editor [Frances Fisher] of the Hollywood Daily approaches freelance journalist Daniel McKinney [William Mapother], a war veteran and Republican, to report. With the help of contact Elliot [David Arquette], the newspaper believes Daniel's report will line up behind the oil industry. Daniel is easily influenced at first, until he meets activist Mika [Kerry Knuppe]. Joshua and Rebecca Tickell wisely focus more on the local population than on the political machinations, and Mapother's down-to-earth portrayal keeps this film with its social message grounded.
