"If there is one day to decide something in life, this day is today."

Just before the transition to the new millennium, two very different people meet on the roof of an apartment building in Rio de Janeiro. João is in prison, but has no intention of spending the new century there. With the help of a guard, he manages to escape. But he has to pay a heavy price for that help. Precisely on New Year's Eve, the teacher Maria is abandoned by her husband. She is unable to reach him by phone all day. Around noon, she grabs a bottle of champagne and, in desperation, heads to the roof of her luxury apartment building.
