Mozambique. Sofia lives with her family in a shabby house on the edge of boiling and wriggling Maputo. Her father is a miner and lives far from home. She wants to become a doctor and is studying for her entrance exam. It starts badly: her only uniform blouse is burned and there is hardly any money to buy a new one. And a teacher has also died. Aids, it turns out. Sofia's high-spirited friend Jessica had also slept with him. Teachers at that school apparently have few scruples in that regard.
