"Plunged into the game of life, no woman knows which road will lead to happiness."
The Jewish Brandeis family owns a store in Wisconsin. The entire family has to make many sacrifices so that their son Theodore can study violin in Dresden. There, he eventually marries a worthless choir girl. Meanwhile, his sister Fanny moves to Chicago. She becomes a successful businesswoman in a department store there. After his wife leaves him, Theodore returns to the United States with his son to live with Fanny.
