Muidhond plot
After being released from prison for lack of evidence, Jonathan returns to his mother who lives in a small house near the dunes. There Jonathan resolves to become a different, better person. But even though he strictly adheres to the rules, his good intentions are soon tested when a young girl moves in next door.

An unpleasant film about a young man who struggles with his sexual orientation. The theme is quite shocking, the story is actually not. It is depicted rather colorless and sober, not to say rather dull. Good thing, because that doesn't have to be me anymore. Not a movie that leaves me with a good feeling anyway.

Jonathan [Tijmen Govaerts] returns to his mother [Ina Geerts] after serving a prison sentence and is advised to keep doing 'his exercises'. He goes out of his way to avoid any contact with his 9-year-old neighbor Elke [Julia Brown] and spends a lot of time caring for a muidhond, a carp-like fish he caught himself. Elke's mother [Greet Verstraete] leaves her at home a lot during the day and because there is no one else around, she contacts Jonathan herself. Both seem to need some contact, but for Jonathan there is a major obstacle. Brilliantly directed psychological drama in which Toye uses the camera to make clear what Jonathan is unable or afraid to say. Brown is unforgettable as the somewhat pushy, human-craving Elke in a film that treats a controversial and complex subject with honesty, respect and oozing with tension.

A film that you should go into without too much prior knowledge. The film tells the story of a young pedophile who we don't know if he actually assaulted someone besides his sick feelings. He struggles with those feelings, is not accepted in society or cannot really adapt to it himself. It doesn't help that a young girl comes to live right next to him and who also pays him that little attention. The writer of the original book then puts next to the young pedophile a family situation of the young girl in which her parents neglect her. To throw the question on the table which is worse, a pedophile who does nothing (for now) or parents who neglect their children...
It is difficult to sympathize with the main character, but it can show the viewer the difference between the will and the deed. From when do you judge? In any case, the safety of the child is paramount.
Patrice Toye tackles a difficult theme, but still brings it back in a balanced way. Starring Tijmen Govaerts in this difficult role. In terms of the same subject, hunting was more useful to me, even though Muidhond is more daring. And maybe that's why it's so fragile. It didn't really overwhelm either.
