Mori to Mizuumi no Matsuri plot

Ishitaro Kazamori, aka Byakki (the Phoenix), is a militant Ainu who delivers school books and goods on his horse. He behaves like a kind of rough Robin Hood, who stands up for the rights of the Ainu minority in northern Japan. As a result, he often comes into conflict with Dr. Ike, a "shamo" (non-Ainu) and chairman and champion of the Ainu culture, and Oiwa, a racist fisherman whom Byakki knows is concealing his actual Ainu heritage. As the Bekanbe Festival approaches, tensions grow between the Ainu and Japanese settlers.
