When Victoria falls from a boat into Lake Patzcuaro, she is rescued and taken by a man, who abuses her afterwards. A few days later - on Ash Wednesday - she recognizes him in church: it is a priest. She develops an aversion to the clergy. Years later, while running a brothel, she falls in love with a man who turns out to be a priest as well.
