Mary is twenty. She lives with her mother Jeanne, who has been bitter and distant since her husband's death. During the day Marieke works in a Brussels chocolate factory. At night she flees into the arms of many older men. She feels strong, safe and free with them. The arrival of Jacoby, a publisher who lives abroad and is now looking for her father's last manuscript, throws Marieke's balanced life upside down. Her mother does everything she can to keep them separate. After all, she fears that he will reveal the secret that has been kept hidden for years.
