At the age of forty, Dame Margot Fonteyn is considered to be at the end of her career as a prima ballerina and Ninette de Valois therefore decides to reduce her dancing roles in the Royal Ballet. Then the young Russian dancer Rudolf Nureyev, a defector to the West, comes into her life and gives a new vigor to her career. Frederick Aashton creates a new ballet for them and they become the golden couple of the ballet world. But Margot is married to Roberto "Tito" Arias, a Panamanian politician with a dubious reputation who is not sympathetic to her calling and is also likely to be unfaithful to her. When he is shot and paralyzed for the rest of his life, Margot has to dance well into her sixties to pay for her husband's expensive treatments, although she still worked with Rudolf in the 'Ballet of the 20th Century'. .
