Main Street plot

"The Story That Made the World Sit Up in a Dazed Surprise"

Carol Milford, a bright, artistic city girl, moves to Gopher Prairie when she marries one of its esteemed citizens, Dr. Will Kennicott. Disappointed with the small, unprepossessing, and unprogressive town, she decides to uplift it, but the townspeople are unsympathetic and think she's putting on an act. Bored by her neighbors and misunderstood by her husband, Carol befriends Erik Valborg, who shares her views. But she refuses his offer of love and escape.
