Ida's father has smeared him with another lady to Paris and her mother is therefore heavily involved in alcohol. To prevent Ida and her little brother Skrubsak from being sent to an orphanage, little Ida keeps the household running on her own until she literally drops out and plunges into that swirling river in sheer desperation.
