Les Misérables plot

France in the early 1800s. Forced to embark on the path of theft to support his family, poor Jean Valjean (Fredric March) is sentenced by the court to 10 years of hard labor on a galley. Convicts are forced to report regularly to the police after their release, but Valjean takes on a different identity and disappears from sight. Under the name Champmathieu he builds up a successful life as an entrepreneur. He even makes it to mayor, but then the new police inspector Javert (Charles Laughton) arrives in town. Javert used to work as a chief jailer on the same galley where Champmathieu was imprisoned and is the only one who could expose him. Because the law is equal for everyone and by law Valjean is a criminal on the run.
