Les Chouans plot
The Marquis de Montauban returns to France in 1799 and becomes the driving force behind a royalist revolt. He gets the support of the fanatic Madame de Gua. However, he falls in love with the beautiful Marie de Verneuil, without knowing that she has been ordered by the police to betray him. But Maria begins to love him more and more and does not have the courage to fulfill that task. They both decide to renounce their ideals and flee.
