Paris 1914. Marie Benjamin is illiterate. She has an inexplicable fondness for silk. She enters a department store in Paris and cuts a piece of precious red silk from a large roll with a razor. She faints and the scroll falls on top of her. She is thrown in jail as a shoplifter.
