La Partie d'Échecs plot
One day, a priest rescues a young orphan, Max, who wants to commit suicide. It turns out that Max is exceptionally good at chess. Years later, when he takes part in a tournament as a chess grandmaster, he plays against an arrogant English lord, who by winning the tournament hopes to obtain the hand of the daughter of the Marquis who organizes the tournament. He doesn't like this, and urges Max to win the match. Max comes under the influence of the beautiful woman, and becomes involved in a deadly political game.
