"The spirit of a people can never be conquered."
May 1520, shortly after the arrival of the Spaniard Cortez in the Aztec territory of Mexico. Topiltzin is one of the few survivors of a brutal massacre by the Spaniards at the great temple of Tenochtitlan. This young Indian is an illegitimate son of the Emperor Moctezuma and he finds his country back under Spanish rule, where the Christian priest Diego has the mission to convert the local population. The two men face each other in a conflict between the old and new worlds.
