Marianne Farrère [Isabelle Huppert] is the incredibly wealthy heiress of the title who escapes the humdrum of her daily life thanks to the flamboyant, extroverted photographer Pierre-Alain Fantin [Laurent Lafitte]. At a time when the wartime pasts of both Marianne's father and her husband, Guy [André Marcon], are causing a stir in the media, Marianne spends millions to support Pierre-Alain's ambitions, much to the disgust of her daughter, Frédérique, and family servant, Raphaël [Jérôme Bonjean]. Lafitte is sublime as the manipulative yet undeniably charismatic Fantin, who never hides his motives. Huppert gives Lafitte the space to make every scene, but is equally good as Marianne, whose decisions (like the family) you're never quite sure of.
