La Ciénaga entre el Mar y la Tierra plot
La Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta is a river delta at the mouth of the Magdalena River in northern Colombia. Little Alberto lives there with his mother Rosa in a stilt house. One day he feels severe muscle pain and he develops symptoms of paralysis. The verdict is harsh: he suffers from a severe form of dystonia, a muscle disease that can cause serious motor disturbances and complete paralysis. Alberto is now 28 years old. He feels trapped in an unwilling body, confined to his bed and a breathing machine. He hopes to one day be able to view the vast ocean, some 300 meters away. Sometimes he is joined by a childhood friend, the stunningly beautiful Giselle, with whom he is secretly in love. His mother thinks she's spinning Alberto's head and making him have false illusions.
