Nueva España (= Central America), late 16th century. A leader of the Tameme Indians is held captive by the Spaniards on suspicion of rebellion. Franciscan monks know he is innocent and they have a key witness: Elisa, the daughter of a Spanish nobleman. The Indian Painalli must bring Elisa to the coast in one piece, so that she can testify at the Spanish court. Hot on the heels of Spanish soldiers who use Painalli's evil brother as a guide, the Indian and the damsel embark on a hellish journey through the jungle and sweltering desert…
