Kotpanum Chonio plot
Set during the late 1920s and early 1930s when Korea's national tragedy was at its height from Japanese colonization, The Flower Girl chronicles the harrowing life of Koppun, the daughter of a poverty-stricken farm worker. Due to a debt of three baskets of grain, Koppun's brother Chol Ryong becomes, after the death of her father, a servant to an evil Korean landlord. When her brother subsequently ends up in prison, the mother takes over the role of the landlord's serf. She will eventually work herself to death, forcing the daughter to succeed her. The suffering and misery that befell Koppun's family is the epitome of the calamity that befell the Korean people during the Japanese colonial period.
