August 3, 1961. Chancellor Konrad Adenauer receives disturbing news early in the morning: barbed wire is being unfurled at the border with the Soviet-occupied Eastern sector in Berlin. Adenauer knows he must act quickly. After all, the elections are just around the corner. It is generally assumed that he will immediately leave Bonn for Berlin, but the question is whether that is the right decision...
