The reviews were not very positive. My motivation to watch the film anyway was the truth-based subject. I liked the movie a lot. The acting isn't great at first. However, I found it sufficient and certainly above GTST level. The level grows throughout the movie. Unfortunately, the boy couldn't quite keep up with the cast and plays a rather one-dimensional character. Father and mother are well placed. It comes across as realistic and after watching the film you have the feeling that you have had a look at a world that I do not know. It's a short film, but it doesn't feel that way. The tension is also well built. I can't give a really high score because it just doesn't rise above the average level. And the beginning, the reason, the context, 10 minutes extra could have been spent on that, which would bring the film to a still modest 94 minutes. But all in all, three stars and a good movie night.

The film adaptation of Janneke Schoonhoven's autobiographical novel starts in 2004 when Hanne Veenhoven [Karina Smulders] waves goodbye to her children Azim [Jurgen Bogaert[ and Bibi [Fiona Livingston] when they leave for Eurodisney with her ex-husband Nizar [Cahit Õlmez]. She is completely stunned when Nizar calls her some time later to say that he has fled to Syria with his children because racist strangers threatened to kill him if he did not leave the Netherlands. She enlists the help of Wouter Siemons [Thom Hoffman] to help Nizar and the children return safely to the Netherlands, but it soon becomes clear that Nizar wants to stay with his family in Syria. Hanne spends so much time with her children in Syria that it affects her relationship with Bertus [Tjebbo Gerritsma] and their much younger children. The basic information is interesting and still current, but it does not provide any insight into the history of Hanne and Nizar and it remains unclear what drives Nizar to kidnap his children.

If you drop out in advance because it concerns a Dutch production or because the title may not deserve the beauty prize, then I advise you to leave it at that. The soap-like defects that we often see in Dutch (television) productions (disproportionate level in terms of acting, strange choices in camera work and editing) can also be found here. Still, I thought it was a most enjoyable film. Karina Smulders in particular is convincing, but Cahit Olmez and the two children also know what to do with it. The film excels in a number of scenes in which the emotions run high and the tension is also regularly good. Fortunately it doesn't take longer than necessary and also in terms of exaggerated sentiment I actually found it not too bad; Ron Termaat sticks to the essence of the story. Not an exceptional film in any other respect, but lovers of Dutch dramas should not miss this film.
