Kita no Sakuramori plot
In August 1945, the Soviet Union attacked the area near Sakhalin Island. Tetsu Ezure (Sayuri Yoshinaga) escaped with her two sons from Sakhalin and ended up in the city of Abashiri, located in Hokkaido prefecture in Japan. Despite a lot of work, they had to deal with extreme cold and famine there. In 1971, Tetsu's second son Shujiro (Masato Sakai) returns to Japan after trying his luck in the United States. He visits Abashiri, where his mother still lives, for the first time in fifteen years.
