Kinetta plot

The unkempt and shabby seaside resort of Kinetta, outside the tourist season. A plainclothes cop (Costas Xikominos) with control freak tendencies, has an eye for Russian women and an obsession with BMWs. He joins forces with the equally eccentric employee of a photo shop (Aris Servetalis) and a hotel chambermaid (Evangelia Randou). Together they ritually stage crime scenes, where local women became victims of a serial killer. Until their strange desires impose themselves on each other's lives...

After having just seen Poor Things in the cinema, I caught his debut film on Mubi. 2x Lanthimos in one evening, it can't get any crazier. But Kinetta was a bit disappointing. A very minimalist film in everything actually. Slow cinema with often a fixed camera. Long shots that focus on one thing.

The dialogues are very sparse and the plot is not very interesting. A strange plot in which three people reenact scenes from a murder case. One of the men is a police officer and is therefore literally at the source reenacting the crime scene in detail. A strange hobby indeed. The acting is laughably bad, but that was the intention. Also because the plot was not always well known to the other(s).

Certainly not a high flyer and nothing comparable to the later Dogtooth. A fascinating director who likes to color outside the line, here too, but with too little panache to really catch on.

Not my cup of tea at all. It's kind of funny for five minutes, but I didn't find anything else interesting (too abstract, too absurd), and those good hour and a half felt like a million bucks. The choice of location in such a run-down resort is decent, but visually it's also lacking. The style itself is quite well-executed, and that's not a lack of skill, just something that just doesn't suit my taste. 1.0*.
